11th Annual International Mars Society Convention News

by Alex Kirk last modified 2008-03-31 15:30

In 1998, The Mars Society's founding declaration was signed at the University Memorial Center at the University of Colorado in Boulder. We are pleased to announce that we are returning to that facility for the 11th Annual International Mars Society Convention. This event will take place from August 14-17, 2008 - and programming is already beginning to come together at a rapid pace.

Our confirmed speakers include:

- Dr. Alan Stern (Associate Administrator, NASA Science Directorate)

- Dr. S. Pete Worden (Brig. Gen., USAF, ret.; Ames Research Center Director)

- Elon Musk (Founder and CEO of SpaceX)

- Dr. Chris McKay (NASA Ames Research Center)

- Dr. Carol Stoker (NASA Ames Research Center)

- Dr. Bill Clancey (NASA Ames Research Center)

- Dr. Guy Consolmagno (Vatican Observatory)

- George Whitesides (Executive Director, National Space Society)

- Dr. Robert Zubrin (President and Founder, The Mars Society; Author of The Case for Mars)

Register now!

In addition to outstanding speakers, we will also be featuring some special programming that will include:

Hubble Space Telescope
Why is it worth the risk and expense to repair HST? We will have speakers to discuss the future repair mission as well as the numerous astronomical discoveries that HST has made over its lifetime.

Mars and Campaign 2008
What will the 2008 elections mean for the future of the space program? We will be holding extensive programming to discuss this topic.

Mars Project Challenge
Finalists in The Mars Society Mars Project Challenge (MPC) will make presentations explaining why their proposed project should be The Mars Society¢s next big project. At the conclusion of the MPC presentations, the membership of the mars Society will have an opportunity to vote for the project which they feel would best promote The Mars Society¢s goals of sending humans to Mars.

A Call for Papers
Presentations for the convention are invited dealing with all matters (science, engineering, politics, economics, public policy, etc.) associated with the exploration and settlement of Mars. Abstracts of no more than 300 words should be sent by June 30th 2008 to: The Mars Society, PO Box 1312, Big Piney WY, 83113 or via email to Marsabstracts@aol.com (e-mail submission preferred).

If you would like to volunteer at the Convention, please email Patt Czarnik at abstracts@marssociety.org. Volunteers will be offered discounts on their registration based on the number of volunteer hours they donate.
